Classes are located at the Hazel & J.W. Ruby Community Center at Mylan Park: 111 Mylan Park Ln, Morgantown, WV 26501 (off of Chaplin Hill Rd)
We try to keep the class sizes small. Typically classes consist of 3-6 dog handler teams. If we have an influx of students we will offer an alternate class at a different time and/or day of the week during the same session if possible.
(Starts 9/09/24. COST $95) A fun class with emphasis on socialization of puppies 12 to 20 weeks of age, relationship building with the owner, and prevention of common behavior problems. Puppies are
taught to accept handling, take treats gently, and prevention of playful puppy nipping, while building confidence in greeting both people and other dogs.
(Starts 9/09/24. COST $60) Owners who wish to exhibit their dogs in the dog show ring are taught by experienced instructors the basic handling skills for themselves as well as the correct stances and gaits for their dogs to be successfully presented to the judges in the conformation ring. For more information about the sport of conformation, click here!
(Starts 09/10/24. COST $95) Class is structured for owners and dogs who have no previous obedience training. Dogs over 5 months of age learn basic obedience exercises: walking on a loose lead, sit, down, stay, and coming when called. Additional activities such as fun games and other activities stressing interaction of owner with their dog are included.
(Starts 9/10/24. COST $95) Rally is a fun way to learn and practice obedience exercises as the handler and dog navigate their way through a course of "instructional signs" each describing a task to complete. For those interested in trialing: This class will prepare participants for the Novice level Rally trial classes. If just plain fun is your goal there's no better way to have it! This class is best suited for a dog/handler team that has previously completed a Fundamentals of Obedience class.
New class in which dogs over 6 months of age, who have completed one Fundamentals of Obedience class, learn training methods based on those used to train real life bomb and drug search dogs. Dogs are taught to develop their natural ability of smell as they are trained to find hidden sources of essential oils. Fun way to build confidence in sporting breeds or senior dogs, as well as use up extra energy in young dogs.
For dogs and handlers who have completed Introduction to Scentwork and desire to continue in order to have fun or to participate in AKC Scentwork Trials. Dogs will further hone their scenting skills by seeking hides that are inaccessible such as hidden, buried, or placed in water. Practice will concentrate on hides above eye level but still considered accessible. Handlers will continue to learn how to read the body language of their dogs during the “hunting experience.”
Off-site locations are an added benefit as long as weather permits.
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Certification is an owner incentive program designed to get owners to attend a basic training class with their puppies. All dogs need the necessary training components which are stressed in this program including Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsible dog ownership. Each puppy and owner choosing to participate will be tested on 20 items over the course of the class. Dogs who pass all items on the AKC S.T.A.R. puppy Test will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records.
Dogs over the age of 12 months who have completed one Basic Obedience class are introduced to obstacles such as wheel chairs, carts, walkers, and other items that they may encounter in visits to medical facilities or nursing homes. Therapy dogs must also be gentle and easy to manage as they interact with patients.
Not only does CGC training create long-lasting trust between you and your pup, but also ensures you’ll be good neighbors and friends to everyone around you—and, if you’re interested in going beyond the basics, CGC also lays the foundation for other AKC sports and activities like obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. This class will prepare you and your dog for the Canine Good Citizen Certification Test.
